Personally, I cannot think of a better way to divide our country, than by promoting biliguism in commerce & government. When one cannot speak English, and the other cannot speak Spanish, there is a clear division! Those are the linguistic walls that our government & business leaders actively seek to put up, brick by brick.
There are some, of course, that suggest that every person become bilingual and that will ease the way. They point to Sweden, perhaps, where many are reported to be masterful in 3 or even 4 languages. Yet Sweden is a tiny country, surrounded by other tiny countries that all have their own language, so it is more of a necessity for them than us. For exactly what advantage would bilingualism (as a nation) gain us? Most Americans have either never been to Mexico, don’t plan to go anytime soon, and don’t have enough dealings with that nation to make it worth their while to learn Spanish. Going on vacation to Cancun is just not enough incentive for most people to learn a foreign language!
Oh, but wait, they’ll say,we have so many new immigrants whose only language is Spanish – shall we “isolate them” by only speaking English?
Since the immigrant is coming to OUR country, where for today English holds sway, let us not isolate them, but let us make it plain that we wish them to learn the language of their adopted country. By promoting bilingualism everywhere instead of ESL and Americanization classes, we prolong division & separation. Is it any wonder that some Hispanic immigrants are slow to learn English? They are not solely to blame, when so much of society today is telling them it’s OK to keep their native language as their ONLY language.
As many Hispanics are already bi-lingual by necessity, they give up little. Those who do not speak English are at a disadvantage, to be sure, yet there are vast areas of the U.S. where one can live from cradle to grave without learning a word of English. We are definitely past the point where bilingualism has become the norm, yet that is not a good thing, for it does not promote unity & harmony.
What it DOES promote is a division along the lines of US & THEM.
Although it may be unpopular in today’s culture, I believe Teddy had it right:
President Teddy Roosevelt on Being an American – 1907
“In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin.
But this is predicated upon the person’s becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”
Nativist? You betcha! It’s like a breath of fresh air!
